Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and, once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed.

Dienekes, a Spartan soldier, was proclaimed the bravest of the 300 at the Battle of Thermopylae. According to Herodotus, in Book 7 of his Histories:

"Although extraordinary valor was displayed by the entire corps of Spartans and Thespians, yet bravest of all was declared the Spartan Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by one of the men of Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that their arrows would block out the shade. Dienekes, however, undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, "Good. Then we will fight in the shade.'"
