News - Belgian Campeonate PRE 2008, Flémalle

Back to Current News

The Belgian PRE association held its 2008 championship over the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of August at the Centre Liégeois de Promotion de l'Elevage et des Sports Equestres in Flémalle (near Liege).

This was an official competition which meant that it was run in accordance with the ANCCE rules and regulations for the conformational / functional competitions. As there were more than 100 horses competing, three Spanish judges were in attendance - Antón Vázquez Fernández, Sebastián Bastida Porras and Vicente Granell Ivorra.

The morphology section was run first. As with the Dutch Championship, the horses were asked to walk down the centreline of the arena, past the judges towards the end of the arena, where they were longed at a trot and canter. They were brought back to a trot and then asked to trot up the long side of the arena, before being brought back to the centre of the arena to be scrutinised.

Due to the large number of horses participating in the competion, the classes were long - and I wimped out at about 16:30 on Saturday afternoon (for a supposedly summer day, it was freezing), which meant I only watched three classes. I believe that morphology competitions were planned to run until about 20:30.

There were around 60 exhibitors in attendance, and approximately 126 horses presented. 45 of the exhibitors were from Belgium, four from the Netherlands, five from Spain, four from Germany and two exhibitors from France. Around 58% of the horses presented were bred in Spain; according to the program, approximately 86% of the stallions in the 7-years and over section were bred in Spain. Generally, the mare and foal sections had a higher percentage of mares and foals that were bred in the exhibitors home countries.

The three year old fillies class was won by the lovely filly Oliveña (Enamorado XIII x Golondrina XLII), bred and (excellently) presented by La Barquera from Spain. Second place was awarded to the Spanish bred Giorgia (Sedante x Tusa II) of Belgium's Alandu, and the third place went to Spanish bred and Belgian owned Jerezana CXXXIII (Pinturero XXII x Descarada LXXXII).
